Application Engineer - Mechanical

Hyspan

Chula Vista, CA

Full job description

Position Summary

Hyspan Precision Products is seeking Application Engineers to work directly with customer engineering teams to define requirements, evaluate design approaches, and develop engineered solutions for piping and pressure systems operating under demanding thermal, pressure, and motion conditions.

The role sits at the intersection of the customer and Hyspan's engineering and manufacturing organization. Application Engineers work directly with customer engineers, maintenance teams, procurement personnel, and other technical stakeholders to translate an application need into a manufacturable, technically sound solution.

That engagement is owned end to end. The same person handles the initial inquiry, defines the solution, prepares the quotation, takes the order, coordinates it through production, and sees it delivered.

Customers come to Hyspan when their application falls outside what a catalog can answer: unusual movement or anchor load constraints, cryogenic service, shipboard shock and vibration requirements, high-cycle thermal duty, corrosive or high-purity media. This is a technical position with substantial customer contact.

About Hyspan

Founded in 1968 and headquartered in Chula Vista, California, Hyspan designs and manufactures metal bellows expansion joints, braided flexible metal hose assemblies, ball joints, packed slip expansion joints, and specialty engineered products for critical piping and pressure systems worldwide.

We are one of a small number of manufacturers producing all four expansion joint technologies and a member of the Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association (EJMA). We design and manufacture to EJMA Standards, ASME codes, and NAVSEA requirements, and maintain ISO 9001 certification and ITAR registration. Manufacturing operations are in Chula Vista, California and Tijuana, Mexico.

Hyspan is 100 percent employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).

Markets

  • Naval and defense: surface combatants, submarines, and shipyard programs built to NAVSEA and MIL specifications
  • Power generation: combined cycle, nuclear, HRSG and steam turbine systems, geothermal, and district energy
  • Scientific research: particle accelerators, cryogenic and superconducting systems, and national laboratory infrastructure
  • Oil, gas, and petrochemical: refineries, LNG facilities, offshore platforms, and process plants
  • Data centers and semiconductor: chilled water and liquid cooling infrastructure, high-purity process fluid delivery
  • Medical imaging, aerospace, and commercial HVAC: cryogenic and vacuum systems, engine test facilities, hospital and institutional piping

The technical problems change substantially from one application to the next.

Responsibilities

  • Own assigned customer engagements from inquiry through delivery
  • Review customer specifications, drawings, and piping isometrics to establish design conditions, including identifying incomplete, ambiguous, or conflicting requirements
  • Perform engineering analysis and product selection: pressure containment, thermal and mechanical movement, cycle life, spring rate, thrust and anchor loading, materials compatibility, and applicable code requirements
  • Develop and present engineered solutions, including design alternatives and trade-offs, in collaboration with customer engineering teams
  • Prepare technically accurate and commercially sound proposals within committed schedules
  • Coordinate with Design Engineering, Estimating, Manufacturing, and Quality to confirm that proposed solutions are producible, compliant, and achievable on schedule
  • Manage a portfolio of concurrent customer applications at varying stages of development
  • Serve as the technical point of contact for manufacturing and quality personnel on assigned orders

Areas of Emphasis

Hyspan is hiring multiple Application Engineers at levels ranging from Application Engineer I through Senior Application Engineer. We are building a team with complementary strengths. Candidates are not expected to bring all of the following. Demonstrated strength in any one area is of interest.

Design and analysis. Depth in mechanical design, stress and fatigue analysis, and CAD. Application Engineers who develop proficiency in Hyspan design standards and EJMA methodology may perform design work on qualifying applications, subject to established review and approval requirements.

Project and process execution. Strength in managing complex, multi-component, long-lead projects and improving the systems and tools the engineering group depends on.

Market and specification expertise. Established fluency in the specifications, standards, and procurement practices of a specific market: Navy and defense, power generation, oil and gas, or industrial OEM.

Customer technical interface. Ability to work effectively with customer engineering, maintenance, procurement, and other technical stakeholders to clarify requirements, communicate design approaches, resolve technical questions, and support projects from inquiry through delivery.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated technical capability
  • Working command of applied mechanical engineering fundamentals: statics, mechanics of materials, thermal expansion, fluid systems, and materials selection
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, piping isometrics, and technical specifications
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication, including direct engagement with customer engineering personnel
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent technical assignments and competing priorities independently
  • U.S. Person status as defined under 22 CFR §120.62, required for access to ITAR-controlled technical data

Helpful, but Not Required

  • Experience with pressure vessels, expansion joints, metal bellows, heat exchangers, flexible metal hose, weldments, or other welded pressure-retaining components
  • Familiarity with ASME Section VIII, ASME B31.1 or B31.3, EJMA Standards, or NAVSEA and MIL specifications
  • Experience in a custom or engineered-to-order manufacturing environment

Compensation

This posting covers multiple levels, from Application Engineer I through Senior Application Engineer. The posted pay scale of $78,000 to $145,000 reflects that range. Level and compensation are based on experience and demonstrated capability.

Benefits

ESOP participation (100 percent employee-owned) · Medical, dental, and vision insurance · 401(k) · Paid time off and holidays · Technical training and professional development

Located in Chula Vista, a significantly shorter commute than most San Diego County engineering employers.

ITAR

This position requires access to technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations. Applicants must qualify as a U.S. Person as defined by 22 CFR §120.62: a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual.

Equal Employment Opportunity

Hyspan Precision Products, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability, genetic information, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law.
