The Opportunity

United Hebrew is seeking a Director of Human Resources to lead campus-wide HR services, manage the HR department, and partner with senior leaders on people-related priorities. This leader will help ensure that the organization’s mission and values are reflected in its culture, policies, and day-to-day practices.


Position Summary

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Human Resources provides strategic leadership in support of organizational objectives and key HR initiatives. The role oversees talent acquisition and retention, performance management, learning and development, rewards and recognition, compliance, benefits, and employee and labor relations, including partnership with the 1199 union community. The Director leads three direct reports: the HR Manager, Talent Recruiter, and Human Resources Assistant/Coordinator. This is a full-time, office-based position in Westchester County, with an expectation of being onsite five days per week.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the resolution of employee-relations matters and coach managers on issues affecting performance and organizational effectiveness.
  • Interpret collective bargaining agreements and advise leaders on their application to facility operations and individual employee matters.
  • Partner with senior leadership and legal counsel on labor-management meetings, contract negotiations, grievances, arbitrations, unemployment hearings, and employment-law matters. Conduct investigations, recommend response strategies, prepare witnesses, and assemble supporting documentation.
  • Provide leadership for recruitment and retention by building a strong talent pipeline, identifying cost-effective sourcing channels, interviewing candidates, participating in selection decisions, and recommending qualified hires.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement HR policies and procedures that meet organizational needs and comply with legal and regulatory requirements. Clearly interpret policies and practices for both managers and employees.
  • Support onboarding, orientation, and broader learning and development initiatives by assessing needs, researching and preparing materials, and facilitating training sessions as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the benefits team to manage leaves of absence, workers’ compensation, and other benefits-related issues affecting managers and employees.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with union officials and delegates to support effective labor relations.
  • Coordinate employee-recognition events, meetings, and other employee-engagement activities.
  • Manage and develop direct reports through onboarding, coaching, training, performance feedback, and corrective action when necessary.
  • Use corporate-service resources effectively to support departmental objectives.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing and resources for department and agency services, monitor productivity, and contribute to annual budget planning.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources or a related field.
  • At least seven years of HR generalist experience, including a minimum of three years in a management role.
  • Strong recruitment and employee/labor relations experience.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience working with the 1199 union is preferred.
  • PHR or SPHR certification is preferred.
  • Experience with Kronos is highly desirable.


Compensation and Benefits


The base salary range for this position is $140,000–$150,000, depending on experience.
