INTERIM ACCOUNTING MANAGER

THE OPPORTUNITY:
Our client is an established organization with a complex accounting environment seeking an experienced Interim Accounting Manager - General Ledger & Balance Sheet to support a focused accounting improvement initiative.
The consultant will perform detailed analysis across selected balance-sheet accounts, evaluate existing accounting treatment and reconciliation practices, resolve outstanding discrepancies, and improve the supporting month-end close processes. A significant portion of the engagement will involve reviewing historical activity, understanding how transactions have been recorded over time, identifying inconsistencies, and establishing clearer and more sustainable accounting procedures.
This role is well suited for a hands-on Accounting Manager or Senior Accounting Manager who is comfortable working through detailed general ledger activity, resolving complex reconciliation issues, and improving accounting processes in an interim environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as a senior finance partner to the CEO, executive leadership team, and Board, providing financial insight and recommendations that support strategic and operational decision-making.
- Review selected balance-sheet accounts and related general ledger activity to understand account composition, historical activity, and current accounting treatment.
- Evaluate whether transactions are being recorded and classified appropriately under established accounting policies.
- Perform detailed account analysis to identify discrepancies, unsupported balances, aging issues, or unusual activity.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts to relevant supporting documentation, subsidiary records, external records, and financial schedules.
- Research historical transactions and determine the source of unresolved or inconsistent balances.
- Prepare or support journal entries, reclassifications, adjustments, and other accounting corrections identified through the review process.
- Develop and improve account schedules that clearly explain beginning balances, period activity, adjustments, and ending balances.
- Support month-end close activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, account reviews, supporting schedules, and variance analysis.
- Evaluate the completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of existing reconciliation processes.
- Identify opportunities to improve account ownership, review procedures, documentation standards, and close discipline.
- Investigate differences between general ledger activity and underlying supporting information and work with relevant stakeholders to resolve discrepancies.
- Strengthen reconciliation methodologies and establish repeatable procedures that can be maintained by the internal accounting team.
- Document accounting processes, reconciliation procedures, review requirements, and exception-handling protocols.
- Improve visibility into balance-sheet activity and unresolved accounting items for finance leadership.
- Support accounting leadership with remediation of higher-risk or historically complex accounts.
- Assist with other general ledger, close, reconciliation, or accounting process initiatives identified during the engagement.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with meaningful responsibility across general ledger accounting, month-end close, and balance-sheet reconciliations.
- Prior experience at the Accounting Manager, Senior Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or equivalent level strongly preferred.
- Strong hands-on experience with complex balance-sheet account reconciliations required.
- Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, accrual accounting, account classification, and financial close processes.
- Demonstrated experience investigating and resolving aged, unsupported, or historically unreconciled accounts.
- Strong journal-entry experience, including preparation, review, reclassification, and account cleanup.
- Ability to analyze detailed transaction-level data and connect supporting activity to general ledger balances.
- Experience improving close procedures, account reconciliations, review controls, and accounting documentation.
- Strong Excel skills with the ability to analyze and reconcile large datasets.
- Experience working in a complex, high-volume, multi-system, or transaction-intensive accounting environment preferred.
- Strong analytical judgment and ability to determine the appropriate accounting treatment for unusual or unclear activity.
- Ability to work independently with incomplete or inconsistent historical information.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work across Finance, Accounting, and operational stakeholders.
- CPA and/or public accounting background preferred but not required.
- Comfortable operating in a hands-on interim environment with limited direction.
- Ability to quickly assess accounting issues, prioritize higher-risk items, and drive remediation through completion.
