Full job description
A leading, mission-driven non-profit organization is seeking an experienced Controller. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will oversee all day-to-day finance, accounting, and financial reporting functions. This individual will lead the accounting team, streamline processes, ensure strong internal controls, and support financial decision-making for executive management and the Board of Directors.
Key Responsibilities
- Accounting & Financial Operations: Direct general accounting functions, monthly/annual closing procedures, AP/AR, payroll, and grant administration in compliance with GAAP.
- Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare internal and external financial statements, cash flow projections, regulatory filings, and tax schedules (IRS Form 990).
- Audits & Compliance: Lead annual audit preparations, coordinate with external auditors, and maintain robust financial internal controls (including OMB Circular standards).
- Budgeting & Planning: Partner with senior leadership to design, manage, and monitor annual budgets and expenditure controls.
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and evaluate finance staff, fostering a collaborative and quality-focused work environment.
- Banking & Process Improvement: Maintain banking relationships and drive continuous process quality improvements across financial systems.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business preferred; CPA is a strong plus.
- Experience: 6+ years of progressive financial systems experience, with at least 4 years in a managerial/supervisory role.
- Industry Focus: Prior non-profit sector experience strongly preferred (experience managing government/public agency contracts and grant administration is highly advantageous).
- Technical Skills: Experience with specialized non-profit accounting software (e.g., AccuFund) is a plus.
- Key Competencies: Strong project management, excellent communication skills, ability to manage confidential data, and a commitment to process improvement.
