Full job description

Senior Bookkeeper

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, onsite

Company Overview

Our client is an established, privately held wholesale distribution and importing company based in Los Angeles. The organization works with an international network of manufacturers and suppliers and operates in a product-driven environment where inventory, commodity pricing, foreign currency, and international trade are important parts of the business.

The company is currently entering an exciting period of modernization and growth. Leadership is investing in new technology, improving internal processes, and incorporating automation and AI into day-to-day operations.

This is a small, hands-on team where employees have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact and contribute directly to how the organization operates and grows.

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Bookkeeper professional to take ownership of day-to-day accounting and financial operations.

This is a broad, hands-on position for someone who understands the accounting needs of a product and inventory-based business. The ideal candidate will bring experience with inventory accounting, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations, month-end close, financial reporting, payroll, and international transactions.

Because the company imports products from international suppliers, experience with duties, tariffs, foreign currencies, landed costs, and international purchasing environments is especially valuable.

This position is best suited for someone who has worked within a smaller wholesale, distribution, manufacturing, import/export, commodity, or similar organization where they have been responsible for multiple areas of accounting rather than one narrowly defined function.

What You’ll Do

  • Maintain accurate and complete accounting records across the business
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Oversee customer collections and payment activity
  • Perform bank and account reconciliations
  • Manage month-end close activities
  • Prepare financial statements and supporting financial reports
  • Reconcile inventory activity and ensure inventory is accurately represented within the financial records
  • Work with inventory costing concepts, cost of goods sold, and margin analysis
  • Account for landed costs associated with imported inventory, including duties, tariffs, freight, insurance, and related expenses
  • Support accounting for international purchases and multi-currency transactions
  • Coordinate with outside CPAs and accounting professionals as needed
  • Process payroll and assist with basic employee administration
  • Maintain organized financial documentation, records, and internal processes
  • Work within the company’s ERP and financial systems
  • Assist with the adoption of new technology, automation, and AI-enabled workflows
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting, accuracy, and efficiency
  • Analyze financial results and help leadership understand trends, changes, and areas requiring attention
  • Support additional finance and operational needs as the company continues to grow and modernize

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of bookkeeping, accounting, or closely related finance experience
  • Hands-on experience with inventory accounting in a product-based business
  • Strong experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and month-end close
  • Experience preparing or supporting financial statements
  • Understanding of inventory costing, cost of goods sold, margins, and inventory reconciliation
  • Experience within a wholesale, distribution, manufacturing, import/export, commodity, or similar inventory-based organization
  • Familiarity with international purchasing, duties, tariffs, landed costs, or related import activity
  • Experience working with ERP or accounting systems
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to accuracy
  • Ability to independently manage multiple accounting responsibilities
  • Comfortable working onsite Monday through Friday in Los Angeles

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an international wholesale or importing environment
  • Experience with commodity-based or fluctuating inventory costs
  • Experience with foreign currencies and international transactions
  • Experience working with customs brokers, freight partners, or international vendors
  • Experience with payroll and basic HR administration
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, or financial analysis
  • Experience adopting or implementing new financial technology, automation, or AI tools
  • Prior experience within a small or mid-sized privately held company

A bachelor’s degree is not required. Relevant hands-on experience and demonstrated ability to perform the work are more important than a specific educational background.

What We’re Looking For

The right person for this position is someone who can do more than simply process transactions and report numbers.

You will thrive in this environment if you are:

  • Accurate: You understand the importance of reliable, organized, and complete financial information.
  • Accountable: You take ownership of your responsibilities and follow through without needing constant direction.
  • Analytical: You can look beyond the numbers and help explain what they mean.
  • Adaptable: You are comfortable learning new systems, processes, and ways of working.
  • Technology-minded: You are interested in using modern tools, automation, and AI to improve efficiency.
  • Proactive: You look for opportunities to improve processes and solve problems before being asked.
  • Collaborative: You are comfortable working as part of a small team where everyone occasionally steps outside of a narrowly defined job description.
  • Personable: You communicate well and are comfortable working closely with leadership, employees, vendors, and outside partners.

Travel

No routine travel is expected. This is a fully onsite position based in Los Angeles.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary of $60,000–$75,000, depending on experience
  • Additional compensation flexibility may be considered for candidates with particularly strong and directly relevant experience
  • $1,800 quarterly health benefit allowance
  • 401(k) eligibility after one year of employment
  • Onsite parking available

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to join an established business during an important period of change and modernization.

Rather than maintaining the status quo, leadership is actively investing in new systems, technology, automation, and more efficient ways of operating.

The person joining this team will have direct visibility into the financial operations of the organization, work closely with company leadership, and have an opportunity to influence how accounting processes and systems evolve.

For someone who enjoys taking ownership, learning new technology, solving problems, and working within a small organization where their contributions are visible, this is an opportunity to play an important role in the company's next stage of growth.

If you have strong accounting fundamentals, understand inventory and international business, and enjoy improving the way things are done, we’d like to hear from you.
