Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and driven Project Accountant to join our growing construction team. This is an exciting opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys working closely with operations and wants strong visibility into project performance, financial results, and business decisions. In this role, you will work directly with Project Managers and operational leaders to support the financial success of multiple construction projects from startup through closeout.

This position offers significant room for growth, with the opportunity to expand into senior project accounting, cost accounting, finance leadership, or operational accounting responsibilities as the company continues to grow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner directly with Project Managers to monitor project budgets, costs, billings, change orders, and overall financial performance
  • Prepare and maintain accurate job cost reporting, project forecasts, and cost-to-complete analyses
  • Manage percentage of completion accounting and ensure revenue recognition is recorded accurately and timely
  • Review project contracts and support accounting treatment related to billing terms, retainage, contingencies, and change orders
  • Track subcontractor invoices, vendor payments, committed costs, and lien documentation
  • Reconcile project accounts, including WIP schedules, accruals, and project-related balance sheet accounts
  • Assist with monthly and year-end close processes related to project financials
  • Analyze budget-to-actual results and provide insight to Project Managers on cost overruns, margin changes, and project risks
  • Support preparation of AIA billing, progress billings, and cash flow reporting
  • Coordinate with operations, procurement, and finance teams to ensure accurate financial reporting across active projects
  • Help strengthen internal controls, documentation, and accounting processes for construction project accounting
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings and closeout reviews to ensure complete financial visibility throughout the project lifecycle

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
  • 2+ years of accounting experience, ideally in construction, project-based, or cost accounting environments
  • Strong understanding of project financials, deadlines, and cross-functional communication
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills with the confidence to work closely with Project Managers and leadership

Technical Skills

  • Percentage of completion accounting
  • Construction job costing
  • Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
  • Revenue recognition for long-term contracts
  • AIA/progress billing
  • Cost-to-complete analysis and forecasting
  • Change order and retainage tracking
  • Account reconciliations and month-end close
  • Budget vs. actual analysis
  • ERP systems experience such as Sage, Viewpoint, CMiC, JD Edwards, or similar construction accounting software
  • Advanced Excel skills including pivots, lookups, and financial reporting

Why This Role Is Exciting

  • High-visibility role with direct partnership with Project Managers and operational leadership
  • Opportunity to influence project performance and help drive profitability
  • Exposure to large-scale construction projects and critical financial decision-making
  • Clear path for advancement as the company grows
  • Collaborative environment where accounting is viewed as a strategic business partner, not just a back-office function
