Full job description

Senior Tax Accountant | Marin County, CA | $130-175k + Bonus | Hybrid

At most firms, seniors don't talk to clients. At this firm, it's built into how they work, and it is the reason their people progress faster than their titles suggest.

The firm is an independent, partner-owned CPA practice of around 30 people in Marin County, four decades old and deliberately not part of anyone's consolidation. They are hiring a Tax Senior because they keep growing, not because someone left.

One busy season. February to April 15. A minimum of 50 billable hours, rising to around 55 for the final few weeks. That is it. September and October run close to a normal 40, with more complex work and less volume. The office closes on Fridays through July.

The work is general practice in the real sense. Individual, business, nonprofit and trust returns, frequently for the same family. Preparation is the core of the role, with review responsibility growing as you take it on rather than as a reward for time served. If the last few years have narrowed you to one return type, this will feel wider.

You will own client relationships from day one. Bring in a client and you take 10% of their fees for as long as they stay with the firm, in perpetuity, and the work goes into the normal queue rather than on top of your existing load. That applies at senior level, not just to managers. Several people here earn five figures a year from it.

And it is the actual route to partnership. Two of the current partners were never managers. They had books of business and client relationships, and that was the path. Nobody here is waiting in line for a title before they are allowed to speak to a client.

Two days from home each week, and the days can move week to week to fit your life rather than a fixed rota.

Who this suits

  • 6 to 8 years in public accounting, CPA or EA.
  • Exposure across the full range of return types rather than a single specialism.
  • Someone who wants client contact rather than working exclusively through a manager.
  • And someone looking to stay somewhere for a long time, because that is who they hire.

If you're thinking about a move and want a firm where you're trusted with clients rather than kept behind a manager, where the work stays broad instead of narrowing to one return type, and where a real busy season still leaves room to earn more if you want to. Reach out for a conversation. Don't worry if your resume isn't final, we can work on that together.

Not quite the right fit, but exploring what's out there? Get in touch anyway.

We work with a range of CPA firms across California (San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego, Sacramento, LA) and we're regularly placing at Senior Associate, Manager and Senior Manager level across all tax disciplines.
