Social Recreation Director

Make a meaningful difference in the lives of Oakland youth. At Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland (BGCO), our mission is to develop our community’s youth into positive contributors to society. We provide programs and services tailored to the needs of today’s youth while complementing the efforts of families, schools, and other community-based organizations.

We aim to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to reach their full potential as goal-oriented, responsible, and productive members of society. BGCO currently serves nearly 2,000 youth across three Clubhouse locations in Oakland, providing outcome-driven programming in three key areas: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles.

This position will be based at the following Clubhouses:

• Leonard J. Meltzer Branch: 920 24th Street, Oakland, CA 94607

Work hours for this role are as follows:

• Academic Year Hours: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
• Summer Hours: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM or 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM (full time hours available upon request)

Job Summary:

The Social Recreation Director is responsible for creating a fun, engaging, and welcoming Clubhouse environment where youth want to spend their time. Think of this person as the “fun architect” of the Clubhouse. Someone who is always thinking about the next game, tournament, competition, celebration, or activity that will get young people excited to participate.

The Social Recreation Director develops and leads a wide variety of recreational activities that promote friendship, teamwork, confidence, good sportsmanship, and a sense of belonging. Programming may include bumper pool, foosball, ping-pong, board games, video game tournaments, arts and crafts, talent shows, karaoke, intramural sports, Club competitions, spirit days, and special events.

This role requires a hands-on, energetic leader who enjoys working directly with youth and can turn everyday recreation into meaningful opportunities for young people to connect, develop new interests, and have fun in a safe and supportive environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

Prepare Youth for Success

• Create a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environment where youth feel connected to the Club and to one another.
• Develop positive relationships with Club members and encourage youth participation in recreational activities.
• Use games and recreation to promote teamwork, confidence, communication, leadership, and good sportsmanship.
• Help youth navigate disagreements and competition in a positive and respectful manner.
• Recognize and celebrate youth participation, achievements, and growth.
• Model positive behavior and uphold safety, conduct, and engagement standards.

Program Development and Implementation

• Plan and lead a diverse schedule of daily social recreation activities for Club members.
• Develop tournaments and competitions such as bumper pool, foosball, ping-pong, chess, Scrabble, UNO, board games, and video games.
• Organize creative and social activities such as talent shows, karaoke, arts and crafts challenges, trivia, and themed competitions.
• Coordinate intramural sports, recreational games, and other physical activities that encourage participation at all skill levels.
• Develop Club-wide activities such as spirit days, themed weeks, celebrations, and special events.
• Regularly introduce new games, activities, and traditions based on youth interests and emerging trends.
• Maintain a structured program calendar that provides youth with consistent and varied recreational opportunities.
• Ensure programs and activities meet BGCO health, safety, and quality standards.
• Manage program supplies, equipment, and expenses within approved budgets.

Supervision

• Oversee and support program staff and volunteers assisting with social recreation activities, providing clear expectations, regular feedback, and opportunities for growth.
• Ensure appropriate supervision of youth during all activities and recreational programming.
• Maintain accurate records of attendance, activities, achievements, and any notable issues.
• Ensure recreational spaces, games, and equipment are organized, safe, and ready for daily use.
• Foster a positive, productive team environment.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Lead or assist with Club-wide celebrations, field trips, special events, and seasonal programming.
• Support other Club program areas and activities as needed.
• Communicate with parents or guardians as needed regarding youth engagement or concerns.
• Help identify and purchase new games, equipment, and supplies that will enhance the Club experience.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• At minimum, enrolled in college working toward an AA or BA degree, or possess equivalent experience.
• Effective leadership skills and understanding of group dynamics and youth development.
• CPR and First Aid certification (required).

Employment Status: Part Time

Salary Range: $22 to $25 an hour
