Full job description
Tax Manager | Marin County, CA | $150-200k + Bonus | Hybrid
Most manager roles in tax hand you a review queue and call it progression. This one doesn't.
The firm is an independent, partner-owned CPA practice of around 30 people in Marin County, four decades old and deliberately not part of anyone's consolidation. They are hiring a Tax Manager because they're growing organically year on year.
One busy season. February to April 15. A minimum of 50 billable hours, rising to around 55 for the final few weeks. That is it. September and October run close to a normal 40, with more complex work and less of it. The office closes on Fridays through July.
The work is general practice in the real sense. Individual, business, nonprofit and trust returns, frequently for the same family. If the last few years have narrowed you to one return type or one industry, this will feel wider, and most people find that a relief rather than a stretch.
Managers here own client relationships. That is the firm's structure by design. Bring in a client and you receive 10% of their fees for as long as they stay, in perpetuity, and the work goes into the normal queue rather than on top of your existing load. Several people are earning five figures a year from this on top of salary and bonus.
Partnership is real, and it's earned through clients rather than tenure. Two of the current partners were never managers. They had books and client relationships, and that was the route. One partner is expected to step back over the next few years. There is no written track, which is the honest position, and it means nobody is waiting in line behind someone else's timeline - it's based purely on merit.
Two days from home each week, and the days can move week to week to fit your life rather than a fixed rota.
Who this suits
- 8 to 10 years in public accounting, CPA preferred.
- Real breadth across 1040, business, 990 and 1041 work.
- Someone who will move between preparation and review as the work demands, because automation has changed that balance and the firm is candid about it.
- Someone looking to stay at a firm for a long time, because that is who they hire.
If you're thinking about a move and want a firm where progression is based on merit rather than tenure, and where genuine work-life balance doesn't cap what you can earn, reach out for a conversation. Don't worry if your resume isn't final, we can work on that together.
