CooperDouglas is partnering with a mission organization headquartered in Los Angeles County with a growing presence across Southern California for a Controller. This Controller position reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and carries full ownership of the organization’s accounting function, financial reporting, audit management, and internal controls. The role is nearly 100% remote with a monthly onsite accounting meeting in the Los Angeles area, candidates MUST currently reside in Southern California.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the full scope of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting across a complex portfolio of partnerships, joint ventures, and corporate entities.
- Lead and manage the annual audit process end-to-end, including planning, timing, deliverables, and auditor relationships.
- Design, implement, and enforce internal controls and accounting policies consistent with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Oversee accounts payable, revenue recognition, treasury, cash flow, payroll, and general ledger functions across the organization.
- Coordinate with third-party property accounting firms responsible for books and records across portions of the portfolio.
- Ensure compliance with 1099 reporting, business tax filings, California franchise tax, and regulatory requirements tied to government housing programs.
- Manage and develop the accounting team, including Property Accountants, a Senior Accountant, and a Corporate Accounting Manager—setting objectives, reviewing performance, and building capability.
- Provide financial analysis, policy recommendations, and strategic guidance to senior leadership, serving as the CFO’s primary resource on all accounting matters.
- Oversee systems management and reporting across MRI and RealPage platforms.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in real estate; affordable housing, LIHTC, or homebuilding experience is a strong differentiator.
- CPA preferred.
- Deep working knowledge of GAAP with demonstrated experience owning audits end-to-end.
- Proven people leadership with the ability to hire, coach, and develop a high-performing accounting team.
- Experience designing and implementing internal controls and accounting policies across complex organizational structures.
- Familiarity with MRI, RealPage, or comparable property management and accounting systems is a big plus.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex financial problems and recommend effective solutions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Compensation & Benefits (Direct Hire)
- Base salary of approximately $210,000, commensurate with experience + bonus
