Full job description
Controller – Family Office | New York City
A highly sophisticated, privately held family office is seeking a Controller to join its New York-based finance team. This is a high-visibility opportunity for a strong accounting professional who wants to step out of a large, siloed organization, gain broader ownership, and work directly alongside the CFO.
The organization is entering an exciting period of transformation as it builds out a newly independent operating structure and continues to enhance its finance and accounting infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner directly with the CFO and become a senior member of the finance organization
- Lead key aspects of the monthly and quarterly close
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger activity
- Support financial statement preparation and management reporting
- Oversee accounting for payroll, compensation, professional fees, technology, rent, and other operating expenses
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
- Manage and develop approximately three junior accounting and financial operations professionals
- Strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Identify opportunities to streamline and automate accounting processes
- Help optimize the organization's recently implemented Oracle NetSuite platform
- Play a meaningful role in building and professionalizing the accounting function
Ideal Background:
- Approximately 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience
- CPA strongly preferred
- Strong technical accounting foundation with hands-on close experience
- Deep understanding of journal entries, debits and credits, reconciliations, and financial statements
- Management company, corporate, or operating company accounting experience
- Experience within private equity, private credit, alternative asset management, or another sophisticated financial services environment is highly attractive
- Family office experience is not required
- Exposure to operating expenses, payroll/compensation accounting, budgeting, and forecasting
- ERP experience required; NetSuite is a major plus
- Ability to operate independently and take ownership in a lean environment
- Strong communication and leadership skills
Why Explore It?
This is a true Controller-track opportunity with a clear path toward becoming the CFO's #2. The successful candidate will have significantly broader ownership than they may have at a large asset manager, direct CFO exposure, people-management responsibility, and the opportunity to help shape the accounting function as the organization enters its next stage.
📍 Location: Midtown Manhattan – 4 days/week
💰 Compensation: $150K–$170K base + $30K–$50K bonus potential / approximately $200K total compensation
