Job Summary

Lead and advance audit programs with a focus on accuracy, innovation, and business-friendly taxpayer engagement. This role is responsible for ensuring that audit methodologies remain effective, scalable, and aligned with organizational goals, while identifying opportunities for revenue recovery and enhancement.

The Director of Audit Services partners closely with leadership, municipal and public-sector clients, taxpayers, and internal teams to maintain high-quality audit outcomes, improve processes, and support the continued evolution of audit programs through data, technology, and operational insight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of local tax and fee audit and revenue discovery programs, including methodologies, processes, analytical tools, and technology-supported solutions.

  • Oversee external audit and revenue discovery activities involving taxpayers and businesses on behalf of municipalities and other public-sector clients, maintaining an accurate, professional, and business-friendly approach.
  • Partner directly with municipalities and local government agencies on tax and fee administration, audit, revenue discovery, and revenue enhancement matters, serving as a trusted subject matter resource.
  • Evaluate complex tax and fee data, reporting practices, transactions, and audit findings to identify revenue recovery opportunities and determine appropriate courses of action.
  • Communicate audit findings and revenue opportunities clearly to clients, taxpayers, businesses, leadership, and other stakeholders, translating complex findings into practical and actionable recommendations.
  • Participate in client meetings, proposal development, interviews, presentations, and special projects involving tax and fee administration, audit services, and revenue enhancement.
  • Provide senior leadership and executive teams with reporting and insight regarding audit program performance, revenue recovery opportunities, emerging trends, risks, and opportunities for continued improvement.
  • Lead and develop the audit team through performance metrics, quality standards, goal setting, coaching, and consistent audit practices while partnering with internal teams to improve processes, technology, data analysis, and client outcomes.

What Success Looks Like

  • Identifies meaningful revenue recovery and enhancement opportunities while maintaining accurate, consistent, and defensible audit outcomes.
  • Strengthens audit methodologies and processes through data, technology, and operational insight, improving effectiveness and scalability.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting, managing, or overseeing external audits or revenue discovery efforts designed to identify missed, underreported, incorrectly allocated, or recoverable tax and fee revenue.
  • Experience working directly with or on behalf of municipalities, local government agencies, taxpayers, businesses, or public-sector clients on tax, fee, audit, or revenue administration matters.
  • Knowledge of local tax and fee programs, sales and use tax, revenue allocation, compliance, and audit methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and evaluate revenue recovery and enhancement opportunities through audit, data analysis, or compliance review.
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, accounting, public administration, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to interpret complex financial, tax, transactional, and operational data.
