- Opportunity to work on highly technical, complex mechanical systems
Tiello has partnered with a leading mechanical contractor in the search for an experienced Senior HVAC / Plumbing Design Engineer to join its mechanical engineering team.
This is a remote opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Engineer with approximately 5-8+ years of HVAC design experience who is comfortable taking ownership of complex mechanical designs with limited oversight.
The engineering team supports highly technical projects with a significant concentration in laboratory, cleanroom, mission-critical, high-tech, and other specialized environments where system performance, reliability, controls, and energy efficiency are critical.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong HVAC engineering foundation. Plumbing design experience is highly valued and would allow this individual to take on additional responsibility within the team, although candidates with predominantly HVAC backgrounds will also be considered.
Position Overview
The Senior HVAC / Plumbing Design Engineer will develop mechanical solutions from initial engineering and system selection through construction documentation, coordination, installation, commissioning, and performance verification.
Unlike a traditional consulting engineering position where involvement may end after the drawings are issued, this role provides the opportunity to see designs through construction and ultimately evaluate how those systems perform in the field.
The Senior Engineer will collaborate directly with other engineers, fabricators, installers, controls programmers, project teams, and construction professionals to ensure mechanical systems are designed correctly, installed properly, and operating efficiently.
This individual should be capable of independently managing significant portions of the design process while collaborating with the broader engineering and construction teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop HVAC and mechanical system designs for complex commercial, laboratory, cleanroom, mission-critical, and high-tech environments
- Perform engineering calculations and technical analysis
- Develop construction documents using Revit and AutoCAD
- Perform building load and energy calculations
- Select and size mechanical equipment
- Design ductwork and piping systems
- Develop HVAC control system designs and sequences
- Support plumbing system design and engineering as experience allows
- Perform equipment and system sizing
- Coordinate mechanical designs with architectural, structural, electrical, controls, and other construction disciplines
- Review constructability and field conditions throughout project execution
- Collaborate with fabricators and installers to ensure designs can be successfully executed in the field
- Work directly with controls teams and programmers
- Participate in control system commissioning and performance analysis
- Troubleshoot design and operational issues during construction and startup
- Review system performance following installation
- Provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers and designers
- Collaborate and cross-train with other members of the engineering team
- Maintain familiarity with applicable building and mechanical codes
- Support continuous improvement of engineering standards and design processes
HVAC Engineering Experience
The Senior Engineer should have a strong understanding of HVAC engineering fundamentals, including:
- Psychrometric analysis
- Fluid mechanics
- Heat transfer and thermodynamics
- Building energy calculations
- Heating and cooling load calculations
- Airside system design
- Hydronic and piping system design
- Duct sizing and distribution
- Mechanical equipment selection
- HVAC controls
- Building automation and system integration
- System commissioning and performance analysis
Experience designing systems for laboratories, cleanrooms, mission-critical facilities, or other technically demanding environments is highly desirable.
Plumbing Design
Direct plumbing experience is not required for every candidate, but it is a significant advantage for this position.
Candidates with experience in areas such as the following are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Domestic water systems
- Sanitary and waste systems
- Plumbing system sizing
- Plumbing codes
- Material specifications
- Process-related piping
- Plumbing equipment selection
- Plumbing construction documentation
Required Qualifications
- 5-8+ years of mechanical engineering or HVAC design experience
- Strong understanding of HVAC system design and engineering fundamentals
- Experience developing mechanical construction documents
- Ability to perform engineering calculations independently
- Experience with equipment selection and system sizing
- Knowledge of piping and duct system design
- Familiarity with applicable building and mechanical codes
- Strong understanding of building load calculations, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
- Ability to coordinate designs across multiple construction disciplines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a collaborative engineering team
- Ability to work primarily within Pacific Time business hours
- Ability to travel approximately 1-2 times per year for company or project needs
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent professional experience
- Plumbing design experience
- Revit experience
- AutoCAD experience
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Laboratory or cleanroom design experience
- Mission-critical or high-tech facility experience
- HVAC controls design experience
- Building Automation Systems experience
- Controls commissioning experience
- Plumbing code and system sizing knowledge
- Design-build mechanical construction experience
