Outsourced Accounting Controller – Real Estate & Construction

A growing boutique accounting and advisory firm is seeking an experienced Outsourced Accounting Controller to support a diverse portfolio of clients, with a strong focus on real estate and construction companies. This is a hands-on role for an accounting professional who enjoys working directly with clients, managing complex accounting environments, and providing accurate financial reporting and business insight.

The ideal candidate will have strong construction and/or real estate accounting experience, excellent knowledge of GAAP financial reporting, and the ability to operate independently while partnering closely with clients and firm leadership.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the outsourced Controller for multiple real estate and construction clients.
• Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including AP, AR, general ledger, payroll, cash management, and bank reconciliations.
• Prepare and review GAAP-based financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
• Manage month-end and year-end close processes and ensure timely and accurate reporting.
• Prepare and review WIP schedules, job costing, project profitability, cost-to-complete analysis, and over/under billings for construction clients.
• Support real estate clients with property-level accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and cash flow analysis.
• Work directly with business owners, CFOs, project managers, and other client stakeholders to address accounting and financial issues.
• Identify accounting discrepancies, clean up financial records, and implement improved processes and controls.
• Assist clients with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis.
• Coordinate with external CPAs, auditors, banks, payroll providers, and other third-party partners.
• Review accounting work prepared by staff and provide guidance, training, and oversight.
• Support accounting system implementations, process improvements, and ERP optimization.
• Provide financial insight and recommendations that help clients improve profitability and business performance.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of accounting experience, preferably including construction and/or real estate.
• Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, Senior Accountant, or outsourced accounting experience.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial statement preparation.
• Demonstrated experience with construction accounting, job costing, WIP schedules, and project financial reporting.
• Experience managing accounting for multiple entities and/or multiple clients.
• Strong knowledge of AP, AR, payroll, reconciliations, general ledger, close, and cash flow.
• Excellent Excel and analytical skills.
• Strong client-facing communication and relationship management skills.
