Senior Accountant – Nonprofit

San Luis Obispo, CA | Direct Hire | $80,000–$85,000 annually


United Staffing Associates has partnered with a well-established, regional nonprofit organization in San Luis Obispo to identify a Senior Accountant who will play a key role in the organization's financial management, reporting, and long-term sustainability.


This is an opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who wants to bring strong accounting fundamentals to a mission-driven organization making a meaningful difference in the local community.


Reporting to executive leadership and working closely with senior management and the Board of Directors, the Senior Accountant will have significant visibility into the organization's financial operations and will serve as a primary accounting resource for day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, fund accounting, grants and compliance.


What You'll Do

  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations and maintain accurate, timely financial records.
  • Oversee the general ledger and prepare monthly journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
  • Support payroll processing and ensure timely federal and state payroll payments and filings.
  • Perform nonprofit fund accounting, including accounting for government grants and other restricted funding.
  • Monitor grant expenditures and support compliance with grant and funding requirements.
  • Prepare timely financial information and reports for executive leadership, the Board of Directors, and other stakeholders.
  • Apply GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles to the organization's financial activities.
  • Support annual audit activities and serve as the internal accounting liaison with external accountants and auditors.
  • Support preparation of Form 990 and other federal and state tax filings in coordination with external accounting professionals.
  • Contribute financial insight to organizational planning, budgeting, and sustainability discussions.
  • Identify and help resolve accounting issues while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and internal control.


What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is a highly dependable accounting professional with strong technical skills, sound judgment, and a genuine interest in supporting a community-focused mission.


Qualifications include:

  • Approximately 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit accounting experience is highly desirable but not required.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting principles; familiarity with nonprofit fund accounting is preferred.
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries, AP/AR, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Experience working with grants, restricted funds, or government funding is highly desirable.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills and experience with accounting software. Experience with QuickBooks is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively with executive leadership, senior management, external accounting professionals, and a Board of Directors.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • CPA or CPA candidate a plus, particularly as it relates to strong knowledge of accounting principles.


Compensation & Benefits

  • $80,000–$85,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • The organization offers a benefits package to eligible employees.
