Technical Business Analyst – Financial Services / Capital Markets
Position Overview
We are seeking a Technical Business Analyst with strong experience working closely with software development teams in a financial services / capital markets environment. This is not a developer role. The ideal candidate is a technically savvy BA who understands how applications work behind the scenes, can communicate effectively with developers and business stakeholders, and can translate application architecture, system flows, and technical requirements into clear documentation.
The successful candidate should understand how UI applications interact with web services/APIs, how system components connect, and how data flows through an application. They should be comfortable reviewing application designs and documentation and have enough technical depth to understand and explain what the development team is building.
A background in Wealth Management, Retirement/401(k), Equity, Equity Derivatives, Trading, or Capital Markets is highly desirable. Candidates with a trading background are particularly encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner closely with software developers, architects, product owners, and business stakeholders to understand application functionality and technical requirements.
- Analyze and document application architecture, system designs, workflows, and data flows.
- Understand how application components work together and how systems communicate "under the hood."
- Understand how a UI calls web services/APIs and how information flows between frontend, backend, services, and databases.
- Create and maintain application documentation, technical specifications, process flows, and system documentation.
- Work with development teams to translate business requirements into clear, actionable technical requirements.
- Participate in requirements gathering, analysis, refinement, and validation.
- Review technical designs and application changes and ensure documentation accurately reflects system behavior.
- Work with developers to understand dependencies, integrations, interfaces, and downstream/upstream system impacts.
- Use SQL to investigate data, validate requirements, perform queries, and troubleshoot issues.
- Write SQL queries involving tables, joins, filters, and basic data analysis.
- Facilitate communication between technical development teams and business stakeholders.
- Participate in an Agile/Scrum development environment, including sprint planning, refinement, stand-ups, demos, and retrospectives.
- Assist with testing, validation, issue analysis, and implementation activities as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Strong experience as a Technical Business Analyst or similar technical BA role.
- Experience working directly with software development teams.
- Strong understanding of application architecture and system design.
- Ability to understand system flows, integrations, dependencies, and how various technology components connect.
- Ability to understand how a UI communicates with backend services/web services/APIs.
- Working knowledge of SQL, including:
- Tables
- Joins
- Queries
- Filtering
- Data validation
- Strong documentation and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
Financial Services / Domain Experience
Candidates should have experience within Financial Services, Capital Markets, Wealth Management, or a related financial domain.
Relevant experience includes:
- Wealth Management
- 401(k) / Retirement
- Equities
- Equity Derivatives
- Trading
- Restricted Stock Units (RSUs)
- Stock Options
- Equity compensation
- Capital Markets
- Brokerage/investment platforms
- Trading applications and workflows
Candidates with direct trading experience are strongly preferred, particularly those who understand trading workflows, financial products, and how trading applications operate.
Technical Environment
The development teams currently work with .NET and DB2, but candidates do not need hands-on .NET or DB2 development experience.
The key requirement is having enough technical knowledge to understand:
- Application architecture
- System components and dependencies
- UI-to-backend communication
- Web services/APIs
- Data flows
- Database interactions
- Application integrations
- Technical designs
- System workflows
This person should be able to understand the technology and explain/document it, rather than simply gathering requirements or producing documentation without understanding the underlying application.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a technically strong Business Analyst who can bridge the gap between business and development.
They do not need to be a programmer, but they should be comfortable sitting with developers, reviewing application designs, asking technical questions, understanding system flows, querying databases with SQL, and documenting how an application works.
Someone who can confidently explain "how the system works under the hood and how all the technology connects" will be a strong fit.
