Senior Finance & Accounting Manager
Location: New Haven, CT
Salary: Up to $105,000
Must come from a non profit organization to be considered
Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Senior Finance & Accounting professional who is equally comfortable with financial leadership and day-to-day accounting operations. This person should genuinely enjoy accounting and be willing to roll up their sleeves to handle Accounts Payable, journal entries, General Ledger activity, reconciliations, Accounts Receivable, payroll, and other accounting functions, while also partnering with the Director of Finance on financial planning, reporting, controls, and process improvements.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the Director of Finance in managing the organization's financial operations, supporting both day-to-day accounting and longer-term financial planning.
- Perform hands-on accounting operations, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, journal entries, General Ledger activity, bank deposits, online donations, and online banking.
- Prepare and analyze financial reports for internal and external audiences; identify trends, issues, and implications for leadership.
- Independently complete monthly bank, General Ledger, and system-to-system reconciliations.
- Manage donor-restricted funds and releases and maintain accurate financial records.
- Develop and strengthen financial controls, policies, and procedures while ensuring compliance with applicable finance, payroll, IRS, and Connecticut requirements.
- Evaluate accounting workflows, systems, and internal controls and implement improvements that increase accuracy, efficiency, automation, and transparency.
- Manage the bi-weekly payroll process through the organization's online payroll system and support employee onboarding from a financial perspective.
- Assist with the annual budget process, including maintaining the budget in Sage Intacct.
- Participate in year-end close and the annual external audit.
- Manage relationships with external vendors, software providers, auditors, and regulatory agencies.
- Provide financial support to staff and student organizations for which the organization acts as a fiscal intermediary.
- Work closely with the Director of Finance and senior leadership to align financial operations with organizational goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance.
What You'll Bring
- 7+ years of progressively responsible accounting or finance experience, preferably within the non-profit sector.
- Strong hands-on accounting background with experience in AP, AR, journal entries, General Ledger, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and experience applying accounting principles in day-to-day operations.
- Master's degree in an applicable field or 5+ years of managerial finance experience.
- Ability to take ownership of accounting and financial processes from start to finish.
- Ability to analyze financial information, identify trends and issues, and communicate findings clearly to leadership and non-finance colleagues.
- Comfortable moving between strategic financial planning and detailed accounting execution.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and accurate with strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to identify weaknesses in financial processes and internal controls and implement practical solutions.
- Strong communication, leadership, customer service, and relationship-building skills.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
- Experience with cloud-based ERP and financial systems; Sage Intacct, BILL, and Blackbaud preferred.
- Experience with endowment accounting and donor-restricted net assets preferred.
- CPA or CMA designation preferred.
