Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Senior Accountant for a highly regarded nonprofit arts and cultural institution. This is a temporary, project-based opportunity based in the Pasadena/Los Angeles, California area, with onsite work preferred; highly qualified candidates may also be considered for hybrid or fully remote arrangements.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Senior Accountant / Tax Manager will provide high-level accounting and tax support to the CFO and accounting team during a critical period of increased workload, tax deadlines, audit activity, and internal transitions. This individual will play a key role in preparing Form 990 and 990-PF returns, with a particular emphasis on private foundation tax work, while assisting with additional accounting and financial projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced nonprofit tax and accounting professional seeking a flexible, high-impact consulting engagement with a respected mission-driven organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare and support Form 990 and Form 990-PF tax returns, including work related to private foundations and nonprofit entities.
- Partner directly with the CFO, Controller, and accounting team to address priority accounting and tax projects during a high-volume period.
- Assist with tax deadlines, audit-related projects, financial reporting, and accounting data analysis.
- Prepare and analyze insurance renewal schedules, retirement plan reporting, and other financial schedules as assigned.
- Utilize advanced Excel skills to organize, analyze, reconcile, and present accounting and financial information.
- Provide additional project-based accounting support and quickly adapt to evolving priorities and internal assignments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated experience preparing Form 990 and Form 990-PF returns, with private foundation tax experience strongly preferred.
- Strong nonprofit accounting, tax, financial analysis, and reconciliation capabilities; experience supporting foundations or similarly structured nonprofit organizations is highly beneficial.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and comfort working with complex accounting and financial data.
- Experience with Sage 100 and/or FileMaker Pro is beneficial, along with the ability to quickly learn new systems and internal processes.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities and deadlines, and collaborate effectively with CFO- and Controller-level leadership.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This temporary opportunity offers an hourly pay rate of $60–$70 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. The assignment is expected to last approximately 6–8 weeks at 20 hours per week, with scheduling flexibility within standard office hours of approximately 9:00 AM–5:30 PM. Onsite work in the Pasadena/Los Angeles area is preferred, though hybrid or fully remote arrangements may be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates. This is currently anticipated to be a project-based engagement; however, the organization may consider longer-term possibilities for an exceptional candidate based on organizational needs.
