Avery Hall

Brooklyn, NY

Full job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Avery Hall is looking for professionals from architecture, design, and development backgrounds who are passionate about their craft, drawn to working within a design-oriented development office, and want to apply their specialized skills while gaining exposure to every stage of the building process.

The Senior Designer owns design intent across Avery Hall's mixed-use and multifamily projects, reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Director of Construction, and senior leadership. The role is engaged from conceptual design through occupancy, spanning the entire building process.

Early in a project, this means shaping massing, unit mix, and façade and material direction alongside the design team. Once construction begins, core responsibilities shift to reviewing and resolving RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, mock-ups, and field sketches; running weekly site walks to verify design execution and finish quality; and working directly with construction and development leadership to resolve field conflicts, sequencing issues, and material substitutions without compromising the design vision. The role also coordinates architects, interior designers, and specialty consultants to keep construction documents execution-ready, and supports punch list, model unit execution, and final turnover through closeout.

This is a hands-on role with direct project ownership and oversight. It requires regular on-site presence at active construction sites as well as in-office time at Avery Hall's headquarters in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON

Design Leadership & Project Oversight

Contribute to conceptual and schematic design (massing, unit mix, façade expression, and material direction) before a project moves into construction documents.

Maintain the overall design vision across the full building process, ensuring field execution ultimately aligns with Avery Hall's standards for design excellence and long-term asset value.

Review concept, schematic, and design development packages for constructability ahead of construction administration.

Manage design execution of exterior architecture, façade, lobby, residential interiors, amenity spaces, and public realm improvements through completion.

Consultant Coordination & Technical Management

Coordinate architects, interior designers, landscape architects, lighting designers, and specialty consultants throughout construction.

Manage interdisciplinary coordination across structural, MEP, façade, vertical transportation, and specialty trades to resolve conflicts and protect schedule milestones.

Ensure construction documents and consultant packages are clear, coordinated, and execution-ready before and during construction.

Materials, Cost & Value Engineering

Review architectural materials, interior finishes, FF&E, and specialty elements for field substitutions and value engineering during construction.

Collaborate with development and construction teams on subcontractor bids, scope leveling, alternates, and procurement packages to protect design alignment.

Develop value engineering solutions that preserve design quality while improving constructability and budget performance.

Construction Administration & Field Execution

Oversee design intent through construction by reviewing RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, mock-ups, field sketches, and finish samples.

Conduct regular site walks to verify design execution, field quality, finish consistency, and resolution of in-field design conditions.

Work with construction and development leadership to resolve field conflicts, sequencing issues, and material substitutions while protecting the design vision.

Support punch list, model unit execution, staging design, amenity completion, and final turnover for a polished end-user experience.

Serve as the primary design point of contact on active sites, keeping field decisions moving instead of stalling on open questions.
