Role Overview


The Assistant Accounting Manager in our commercial real estate setting provides leadership and operational support to the accounting function, ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with GAAP or other set accounting standards, and efficient month‑end and year-end close processes for a portfolio of commercial and development properties. The position supports the Accounting Manager in overseeing property-level accounting, financial analysis, Operating Expense Recoveries, internal controls, and coordination with property management and other departments.

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting & Reporting: Prepare, review and post journal entries for fixed assets, accruals, deferred rent, prepayments, and other balance sheet accounts

MonthEnd Close: Lead monthly and quarterly close activities, including reconciliations, account reviews, and close analysis, ensure timely delivery of financial statements 

Financial Analysis: Review property-level financial statements, general ledgers, rent rolls, accounts receivable, and other key reports; identify variances, risks, and opportunities; provide management with actionable financial insights 

Compliance & Controls: Ensure adherence to GAAP or other accounting principles and set standards, maintain organized financial records and improve internal controls 

Accounting Systems & Data Integrity: Support the maintenance and accuracy of accounting systems, including Yardi or other commercial real estate accounting platforms; review charge codes, GL accounts, and system-generated reports for accuracy.

Management Support: Provide support to the Accounting Manager in accounting operations, special projects, system implementations, process changes, and other financial initiatives.

Collaboration: Partner with commercial property managers, lease administrators, and other functional areas to support property‑level accounting and cost tracking 

Process Improvement: Develop and implement accounting processes, including automation where applicable, to enhance efficiency and accuracy 

Audit Support: Assist in internal and external audits

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

Experience: 5+ years in accounting with at least 2–3 years in real estate or property accounting; experience in accrual‑based and cash‑based accounting 

Skills: Strong knowledge of real estate accounting principles, proficiency in Excel, and Microsoft Office and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Knowledge of commercial accounting software programs such as Yardi or MRi

Industry-Specific Considerations

Familiarity with commercial real estate financial structures, including lease accounting, rent roll management, and property-level cost tracking, budgets and reforecasting.

Understanding of commercial lease terms and their impact on accounting, including rent abatements, tenant improvements, lease commissions, reimbursements, and operating expense recoveries.


Based on qualifications and directly relevant experience, base annual salary range for the role is $105,000.00 - $120,000.00 with eligibility for annual discretionary bonus. Employment includes access to a full suite of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability coverage and participation in a 401(k) with a company match.
