Full job description
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Human Resources Manager to oversee the day-to-day HR function for a small to mid-sized organization. This position will serve as the primary HR resource for employees and management and will be responsible for a broad range of HR, payroll, benefits, compliance, recruiting, and employee relations activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary HR point of contact for employees and managers, providing guidance on performance, attendance, workplace concerns, and employee relations matters.
- Manage employee relations issues, including investigations, disciplinary actions, performance improvement plans, unemployment claims, and employee separations.
- Oversee HR administration, including personnel records, job descriptions, organizational charts, policies, employee documentation, and compliance requirements.
- Manage and review payroll processes, including compensation changes, bonuses, commissions, reimbursements, PTO, and payroll corrections.
- Oversee federal, state, and local payroll tax compliance, including filings, payments, reconciliations, registrations, and year-end reporting.
- Administer employee benefits and coordinate programs such as medical benefits, retirement plans, FSA/HSA/HRA, COBRA, leave programs, and workers’ compensation.
- Partner with external HR, payroll, benefits, and professional employer organization (PEO) providers to resolve issues and ensure accurate administration.
- Coordinate recruiting, candidate screening, interviews, offers, background checks, onboarding, offboarding, and exit processes.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state employment regulations, including wage-and-hour requirements, employee classifications, leave requirements, and required notices.
- Support employee engagement, recognition, company events, and initiatives that promote a positive workplace culture.
- Coordinate performance management and required employee training.
- Identify opportunities to streamline, automate, and improve HR and payroll processes.
- Provide HR reporting and practical guidance to leadership while maintaining confidentiality and sound judgment.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of progressive HR experience, preferably within a small or mid-sized organization.
- Demonstrated experience independently managing a broad, hands-on HR function.
- Strong hands-on payroll administration and multi-state payroll tax compliance experience.
- Experience resolving payroll tax discrepancies, notices, and issues with payroll providers or taxing authorities.
- Strong employee relations and employment compliance knowledge.
- Hands-on benefits administration experience.
- Experience with recruiting, onboarding, performance management, investigations, and employee separations.
- Experience working with a PEO or similar external HR/payroll provider preferred.
- Experience with ICHRA is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field preferred.
- Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and take ownership of issues from start to finish.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with HR, payroll, and benefits platforms.
