Full job description
We are looking for an experienced HVAC Project Engineer to support the successful delivery of commercial and industrial HVAC projects from preconstruction through completion. This role combines technical engineering expertise with project coordination, ensuring that HVAC systems are properly designed, documented, procured, coordinated, and installed in accordance with project requirements, industry standards, and client expectations.
The HVAC Project Engineer will work closely with Project Managers, designers, subcontractors, vendors, field teams, and clients to coordinate all technical aspects of assigned projects. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, technically minded, and capable of identifying and resolving issues before they impact project schedule, cost, or quality.
Core Responsibilities:
- Support the planning, design, coordination, and execution of HVAC projects from preconstruction through closeout.
- Review mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment selections, submittals, and project documentation for accuracy and compliance.
- Coordinate HVAC design and installation requirements with Engineering, Construction, Procurement, Service, and other internal departments.
- Assist with project estimating, takeoffs, equipment selections, scope reviews, and proposal development during preconstruction.
- Prepare and review RFIs, submittals, change orders, equipment schedules, technical documentation, and other project correspondence.
- Coordinate with architects, engineers, general contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel to resolve technical and installation issues.
- Assist with project scheduling and track engineering, procurement, fabrication, and installation milestones to maintain project progress.
- Review project requirements and identify potential conflicts, constructability concerns, and scope gaps before they affect field operations.
- Support equipment procurement by reviewing technical requirements, vendor proposals, lead times, and equipment selections.
- Conduct jobsite visits as needed to review HVAC installation progress, field conditions, quality, and compliance with approved drawings and specifications.
- Assist Project Managers with project budgets, cost tracking, change management, and documentation to help maintain project profitability.
- Participate in coordination meetings and provide technical input to support efficient project execution.
- Help troubleshoot field issues and develop practical engineering solutions that meet project requirements and applicable codes and standards.
- Support commissioning, testing, balancing, startup, punch-list activities, and project closeout as required.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and ensure engineering and construction deliverables are completed on schedule.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in HVAC, mechanical engineering, mechanical contracting, or construction project engineering; experience with commercial HVAC projects is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory with relevant experience.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, mechanical construction, equipment, piping, ductwork, controls, and applicable building codes and industry standards.
- Experience reviewing mechanical drawings, specifications, submittals, and shop drawings.
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents, plans, specifications, and engineering drawings.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, or other construction/engineering software is preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify technical issues and develop practical solutions.
- Ability to work effectively with Project Managers, engineers, field personnel, subcontractors, vendors, and clients.
- A Professional Engineer (PE) license, EIT certification, or other relevant professional certification is highly desirable.
- Experience with HVAC estimating, project coordination, commissioning, or construction management is a plus.
