Legal SME – Contracts & Materials Review

Location: San Francisco, CA

Role: Hybrid (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday to work from Office)


Role Summary

The Legal Subject Matter Expert (SME) will serve as the primary bridge between Legal, Compliance, Business, and Technology teams for Contracts Lifecycle Management (CLM) and Promotional Materials Review (MLR/MRC) initiatives. This individual will provide legal domain expertise, facilitate requirements gathering, support solution design and implementation, and engage with senior legal leadership to ensure business and regulatory requirements are accurately translated into technology solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Domain Leadership

  • Provide subject matter expertise in:
  • Commercial and procurement contracts
  • Contract lifecycle management (CLM)
  • FDA, FTC, OPDP, and industry compliance requirements
  • Legal review, approval, and escalation workflows
  • Interpret legal and regulatory requirements and translate them into actionable business and system requirements.

IT Project Support & Requirements Facilitation

  • Partner with Business Analysts, Product Owners, Architects, and Delivery Teams during project discovery, design, build, UAT, and deployment phases.
  • Facilitate workshops, interviews, and requirement-gathering sessions with legal stakeholders.
  • Define business processes, use cases, user stories, review workflows, approval matrices, and governance requirements.
  • Review functional and technical designs to ensure alignment with legal and compliance expectations.
  • Support testing, validation, and user acceptance activities.

Senior Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a trusted advisor to Legal Operations leaders, General Counsel staff, Compliance Officers, and Commercial Legal teams.
  • Lead discussions with senior legal executives to capture strategic objectives, process challenges, and transformation opportunities.
  • Present recommendations, risks, and implementation considerations to leadership audiences.
  • Drive alignment between legal priorities and technology delivery teams.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in Legal Operations, Contracts Management, Materials Review, Compliance, or related legal functions.
  • Experience supporting legal technology implementations, CLM platforms, MLR/MRC systems, workflow tools, or AI-enabled review solutions.
  • Strong understanding of pharmaceutical, healthcare, life sciences, or highly regulated industry environments.
  • Experience working with cross-functional business and technology teams.

Preferred Experience

  • Pharmaceutical or Life Sciences industry experience
  • Experience with digital transformation, AI-assisted review processes, or legal operations modernization
  • Consulting or client-facing experience

Hourly Salary Range: [70] – [85]

The compensation range displayed reflects the full span of pay across all of our U.S. geographic pay areas and experience levels. Your actual base salary offer will be determined based on multiple factors, including:

• Geographic Pay Area (US 1 through US 5, reflecting cost-of-labor differences)

• Experience & Qualifications relevant to the role

• Internal Equity alignment with employees in similar roles and levels


What This Means for You

• The minimum of the posted range represents the starting point for candidates in the lowest cost-of-labor pay areas (US 5).

• The maximum of the posted range represents the upper threshold for candidates in the highest cost-of-labor pay areas (US 1 / US 2).

• Candidates are aligned to pay areas based on their primary work location.
