Full job description

Philadelphia, PA (Center City) → Relocating to Maple Shade, NJ (late 2026)

A well-established, premier commercial specialty contractor is seeking a hands-on, senior-level Controller to take complete ownership of its financial operations and accounting administration. Reporting directly to executive leadership, you will lead the entire financial life cycle—managing everything from daily transactional accounting (AP, AR, payroll) to high-level monthly closings, job costing, and executive financial statement preparation.

Location Note: The company is currently based in Center City Philadelphia, PA, but will be relocating its office to Maple Shade, NJ in a few months. The ideal candidate must be comfortable commuting to the Philadelphia office initially and transitioning to the Maple Shade location upon move-in.

Core Responsibilities

  • Direct and execute all daily transactional accounting operations, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, AIA billing, lien waivers, collections, payroll, and bank/account reconciliations.
  • Learn and manage day-to-day operations within the company's accounting platform (ProContractor), maintaining ledger integrity and optimizing financial reporting workflows.
  • Produce, track, and analyze monthly Work-in-Progress (WIP) reports, project margin variances, job profitability, and budget-vs-actual cost metrics across active projects.
  • Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes. Prepare complete financial statements (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow) for executive leadership.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting, project-level cash needs, sales tax filings, local tax compliance, and annual audit/tax prep schedules.

Key Qualifications

  • 6+ years of progressive financial leadership or full-scope accounting experience, ideally within construction, specialty contracting, or related project-based industries.
  • Commute Flexibility: Ability to report on-site to Center City Philadelphia initially, with the ability to commute to Maple Shade, NJ following the company relocation.
  • No prior ProContractor experience required, but candidate must possess strong software aptitude and prior experience using established construction or job-costing ERPs (e.g., Sage, Foundation, QuickBooks Enterprise).
  • Construction Accounting Expertise: Deep understanding of full-cycle accounting, percentage-of-completion/WIP schedules, and general construction compliance (liens, insurance requirements, AIA billing).
  • Demonstrated ability to independently handle high-volume AP/AR while simultaneously managing high-level financial reporting and close procedures.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent hands-on experience in full-scope accounting.
