Full job description
The Senior Project Engineer supports the Project Manager and Superintendent in planning, coordinating, scheduling, and controlling commercial construction projects. This role ensures work progresses according to schedule, contract requirements, and quality standards while coordinating subcontractors, design teams, vendors, and project stakeholders. The Senior Project Engineer also provides technical leadership, manages project documentation, and helps resolve complex construction issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate subcontractors, design teams, owners, and vendors to support project execution.
- Lead coordination meetings, document action items, and track follow-up.
- Conduct site walks and inspections to monitor progress, quality, and compliance with contract documents.
- Review plans, specifications, shop drawings, and submittals for compliance and constructability.
- Manage RFIs, submittals, document control, punch lists, and project closeout.
- Identify and resolve design conflicts, field issues, constructability concerns, and coordination challenges.
- Prepare, review, and track potential change orders and assist with owner submissions.
- Review subcontractor and vendor scopes, contracts, General Conditions, exclusions, and procurement requirements.
- Monitor material procurement and delivery to ensure alignment with the project schedule.
- Identify potential schedule and financial risks and communicate them to the project team.
- Assist with project scheduling, quantity takeoffs, estimating, and value engineering.
- Maintain project logs, reports, metrics, and document-control procedures using Procore or similar software.
- Support Substantial Completion, Certificate of Occupancy, Notice of Completion, warranties, and final closeout.
- Assist the Project Manager with project setup and establish effective document-control procedures.
- Train and mentor project staff on document control, RFIs, submittals, and closeout processes.
- Research applicable codes, standards, technical information, and construction methods as needed.
- Provide leadership and direction to project team members while managing multiple priorities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Project Manager or Superintendent.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field required.
- Minimum 3 years of commercial construction experience with a general contractor.
- Experience with large, complex commercial projects; healthcare, higher education, corporate, public works, and science/technology projects preferred.
- Strong knowledge of construction drawings, specifications, contracts, building materials, and construction practices.
- Proficiency with Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and Excel; experience with data management platforms preferred.
- Working knowledge of Primavera P6 and construction scheduling and estimating software.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical documents.
- Excellent communication, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and perform effectively in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate with project team members and external stakeholders.
